Hi Hi! I’m currently making a split-back tank top, and I thought I’d share with you how I’m doing it in case you want to give it a go!
Step One – Buy 1 – 1.5 yards of a knit fabric that you like. [More fabric for a larger size/fit]
Step Two – Find a tank you already like and own to use as a pattern.
Step Three – Pin your tank to the fabric and cut out one front piece and two identical back pieces [be sure to leave about 1/4 inch around the pattern for the hems]
Step Four – Cut the back pieces diagonally to create the kite-back cut. You can do them straight or at a curve depending on what style you want to achieve.
Step Five – Sew the larger shoulder pieces of the front and backs together, making sure to keep right sides together, wrong side out.
Step Six – Sew the sides of the tank together, wrong side out, and hem all unfinished edges.
Step Seven – Sew the smaller shoulder pieces to the already-sewn shoulders, hiding the edges and staying in line with the seams already in place.
Then TA DA! You’re all done! Go you!
I’ll show you mine when it’s all finished. [I still have to hem the sleeve holes =)]
Hope that makes some sense, and good luck!
